The Uljas Koitto ("Noble Endeavor") Temperance Society was founded in Quincy, Massachusetts, in the 1892 as one of many enthusiastic Finnish associations that emerged in different parts of America.
In 1926, the Society bought a two-storey hunting lodge for summer use on Furnace Pond, at the end of Suomi Road thirty miles south from Boston. Of course, a sauna had to be built there. The sauna is still in use. Houses have been built around the pond and there is no longer any sign of the old hunting grounds.
The sauna is open to the public on Saturday’s, mid-April to mid-November. Winter saunas are held every other week mid-November through mid-April.
