Jaakko Karkiainen was born in Viipuri, in the Finnish Karelia, in 1927. He recalls he was one of the last Viipuri inhabitants in 1944, who left the city on his bicycle, before Soviet troops invaded Viipuri.
In 1949 he moved to New York City to study at the university. Now he lives at the Finnish American Home Association complex in Sonoma California.
