5th Finglish trip July 2007 #4
Jon Saari is a professor of Chinese language and culture with a doctorate from Harvard University. Now retired, he collects old log buildings at his summer residence in Kiva, Michigan. Relatives from Ostrobothnia in Finland helped him assemble his last acquisition, a chimneyless “smoke” sauna. Jon spends one half the year in Marquette, Michigan and the other half in Austria, his wife’s homeland.
Kiva is an unincorporated community in Alger County, Michigan. A post office was established on December 11, 1915, named Kiva, after a shortened form of the name of the first postmaster, Sigrid Kivimaki.
