7th Finglish trip September 2008 #30
Nina´s and Harriet´s parents Pekka and Anja moved from Finland to New York in 1970. Pekka and his brother Seppo started the Kulmala Brothers Construction Company in Long Island.
Pekka was a drummer in band and worked also as a bartender at Imatra Hall in Brooklyn and at Tyyni Kalervo´s bar in Manhattan. Kulmala family visited often Tyyni Kalervo´s summer place in Lomala, in northern New York State. Mother and father were eager dancers and the whole family attended Finnish community events.
Eventually their parents got divorced, mother Anja moved to Florida and started a cleaning business. Pekka was a restless soul and got in to trouble with the law and got sentenced to Sing Sing. After his release Pekka also moved to Florida to work in construction business.
Nina is interested in theatre and music and she is a fashionista. From 1986 to 1996 she worked as a Divina in New York bars and she is planning a book of her experciences. Harriet works in a human resource company in Manhattan.
