Emma was born in Hancock, Michigan. Her mother Marsha Penti was the director of Archive of Finnish Studies at Suomi College. After Emma graduated from Hancock Central Highschool she studied at Boston College and Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. Now she works as a Clinical Social Worker.
Emma´s daughter Anja Vieno was named after Emma´s grandmother Vieno Penti, nee Kumpunen. The Kumpunen family came from Alajärvi, Ostrobothnia. Emma´s grandparents Vieno and Donald Penti built and operated cranberry bogs.
