John Ogren Westchester 2009

John Ogren, acclaimed scientist and professor, was born in Calumet, Michigan to first generation Finnish immigrants, Yrjö Johannes and Linda Ogren. Later, the family moved to Marquette, Michigan where, at age 20 John married Irene E Männistö. Irene died in 1982.

John received his Bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan College of Education, and both his Masters and Doctoral Metallurgical degrees from Iowa State University. Thus began his long and illustrious scientific and educational career. For over sixty years, his scientific contributions to the United States’ space exploration and development efforts were numerous, up to and including the analysis of moon rocks brought to earth by the Apollo astronauts.

An accomplished metallurgist and researcher, John completed hundreds of research projects, the results of which were published in various scientific and medical journals. John was awarded 30 patents covering such technological items as high-powered lasers, radioisotope thermoelectric generators and the Minute Man Peacekeeper Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Program.
