Joan Silleck Manhattan 2008

7th Finglish trip September 2008 #29

Lawyer Joan Silleck joins the yoga class at Christopher Street's Finnish Church in West Village, New York. She is also studying in the Finnish language classes in the church. Before moving to St. Johns Lutheran Church at Christopher Street in West Village the New York Finnish Lutheran Church was in Park Avenue Methodist Church at East 86th Street in Upper Manhattan.

Joan´s mother´s family, the Becks, came from Kokkola, Ostrobothnia, first to California and then to a farm in Upper New York. Joan was born in New York City. In her childhood the most important place for her was the New York Swedish Church at East 48th Street. When Joan visited her cousins in Finland she realized that her mother´s family was Finnish Swede and not Swedish as she had thought in her childhood.
